Snowy weekend in store ahead of blustery, bitter start to next week

The Austin area could get as much as 7 inches of snow over the next two days, according to the National Weather Service.

NWS meteorologists are calling for up to an inch of snow Friday, with patchy and blowing snow throughout the day. Snow should start falling after 5 p.m., with the bulk of precipitation coming after 9 p.m.

There could be up to an inch of snow during the day Saturday. A large snowstorm will hit the area Saturday night; meteorologists predict Austin will receive 3 to 5 inches of snow overnight into Sunday. Less than a half inch of further snow fall is expected during the day Sunday.

Temperatures won’t help things. Friday could have a high of 31 with a low of 6, while temperatures are expected to rise to 9 on Saturday before falling to 4 Saturday night. Wind chill values as low as 15 below are predicted for Saturday as well.

Temperatures should rise to 21 during the day Sunday before dropping to 18 below Sunday night with 21 to 29 mph winds and 40 mph gusts. Monday’s high will be minus 12 with a low of 21 below and 16 to 21 mph winds with 29 mph gusts.

The cold will hang around Tuesday when the high will be 12 below. It will warm up to 9 Wednesday and 15 Thursday.
