Austin sophomore Craig Heimark came into this season hoping he’d swim well, but he’s exceeded even his own expectations this year.

Heimark re-set his own100-yard freestyle record and he nearly broke the 200-yard freestyle record as the Packers beat Rochester John Marshall 94-86 Thursday at Bud Higgins Pool. Heimark swam the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.36 seconds and he set a new pool record that was previously held by Luke Schneeman of St. Thomas Academy.

Heimark was within eight-tenths of a second of the Packer record in the 200, which was set by Austin grad Nick Brehmer last year.

Heimark’s time was two seconds than his previous best time.

“I kind of felt it in the water with how far ahead I was. I was kicking pretty hard,” Heimark said.

Heimark was well aware of 100- and 200-freestyles records before this season, but he didn’t think he’d be swimming that fast this year.

“I didn’t think that I’d be breaking any records,” Heimark said. “I just wanted to see how close I could come. I’ve come a lot farther than I thought I would. I’m going to keep pushing myself and I’ll see what happens.”
