LEROY — LeRoy-Ostrander senior Zach Royston may be in the midst of basketball season right now, but he’s going to be looking to play football in the college level after he signed his national letter-of-intent to go to Division II Upper Iowa in LeRoy Wednesday.
Royston played tight end for the Cardinals this past fall and he’ll be making the move to wide receiver as he heads to Upper Iowa, which finished 6-5 overall last season.
“I’m very excited about it and it’s a great opportunity,” Royston said. “I’ve been lifting for basketball and I’ll be hitting it pretty hard after the season.”
Royston, who is 6-3, came on strong this past football season according to head L-O football coach Aaron Hungerholt.
“Zach made a huge stride between his junior and senior year,” Hungerholt said. “He’s a tough matchup and he works hard. He’s got a big frame and he’s got room for growth.”
Royston will red-shirt this season and he received an academic scholarship. He’ll have a chance at an athletic scholarship in his second season.
Royston considered trying to play college basketball, but now he’s ready make becoming the best wide receiver he can be his full priority.
“I’ve got to get used to running routes and running different plays,” Royston said. “Their offense is very complicated.”
Upper Iowa competes in the Northern Sun Conference.
