Underwood: Paint the Town Pink creates a crash of fun

Dig out those warm clothes and come to check out the Demo Derby for “Paint the Town Pink” at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Mower County Fairgrounds.

The big Bruins Paint the Rink Pink game that started this successful effort will be at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22. Buy your tickets early before they are sold out.
Adult Open Hockey is 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Packer Arena. On Feb. 26, we will be at Riverside Arena from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m., and 7 to 8:15 p.m. March 5.
Participants must be at least high school age, and the cost is $6 per session. Goalies are free but must have full gear.
Open ice skating at Packer Arena dates are:
•Wednesday: 4:45 to 6 p.m.
•Saturday: 1:30 to 3 p.m.
Watch for March dates at Riverside Arena. The cost is $4 to skate and $1 to rent skates if you don’t have your own.
The outside ice rink warming houses at Kaufman Park (Eighth Street and 11th Avenue Southeast) and Galloway Park (Eighth Street and Second Avenue Southwest) are open. Kaufman is open daily from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Galloway is only open from 6 to 9 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Ice rinks may be used during daylight hours when the warming houses are not open.
Austin Youth Soccer held their early bird registration Saturday but you can still register up until Feb. 28 by noon at www.austinyouthsoccer.org. Summer soccer rec and competitive traveling teams are for ages 8 to 17.
Spring is just around the corner, and Austin Youth Fastpitch Softball registration forms are available to print off. Head to www.austinyouthsoftball.com for registration information. You may also pick a form up at our office.
Austin Youth Wrestling will host the NYWA District Qualifier Tournament on Friday, March 14, at the Austin High School. Interested wrestlers in grades kindergarten through eighth-grade may pre-register by Tuesday, March 11. Forms are available at our office and at www.ci.austin.mn.us or the NYWA site at www.nywa-mn.com. They will accept walk-ins again this year until 5:30 p.m. only. The cost is $12.
For those youth grades five to 12 in Mower County, stop in and check out the Youth Activity Center, which is located in the east rooms of Riverside Arena.
During no-school days we will open at 1 p.m. All activities are free and supervised. We have pool tables, air hockey, DDR, “Guitar Hero,” Wii, PlayStation 3, high-speed Wi-Fi, a computer lab, large-screen TVs and the list goes on. As a treat, there is always free popcorn. Grab some of your friends and stop in to check it out.
Check out the Austin Bruin’s at Riverside Arena. Their next home games will be Feb. 21 and Paint the Rink Pink on Feb. 22. Game time both nights is 7:05 p.m.
