Harold Emerson Canterbury, 92, of Adams, Minn., died at Adams Healthcare Center Sunday, March 9, 2014. He was born Dec. 24, 1921, to Arnal and Lulu (Burns) Canterbury in Portage, Ohio, where he grew up and attended school. His mother, Lulu, died when he was 8 years old, and he was raised by his father and Emily Askins Canterbury. He was trained to fly during his four-year enlistment with the Naval Air Force. He married Georgiana Scharf on Jan. 11, 1947, in St. Marys, Ohio. They made their home in Portage and Bowling Green, Ohio, until 1976, when they moved to Minnesota to farm near Adams. A member of First Baptist Church in Brownsdale, Harold loved the Lord Jesus Christ, his family and farming.
Survivors include his son, Jon (Beverly “Jo”) Canterbury of rural Adams, Minn.; three grandchildren, Jason (Janice) Canterbury, Joshua (Jody) Canterbury and Jeremy (Kristin) Canterbury; 11 great-grandchildren, Zack, Kylie, Brody, Ellie, Cassidy, Chloe, Trent, Sara, Colton, Case and Kenzie; brothers, James (Carol) Canterbury and Richard (Linda) Canterbury of Portage; two sisters, Eileen (James) Avery of Bowling Green, Ohio; Helen (Jerry) Bowan of Portage, Ohio; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Georgiana; son, Tim; two brothers, Earl and Arnal; two sisters, Jean Nusbaum and Mary Beverly.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 14, 2014, at First Baptist Church in Brownsdale with Pastor Ken Petzold officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. The family prefers memorials to the First Baptist Church of Brownsdale, Gideons International or the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
