LITTLE FALLS — Opening statements are expected to get underway in the case of a central Minnesota man who shot and killed two teens who entered his home.

Sixty-five-year-old Byron Smith is on trial on two counts of first-degree premeditated murder for the November, 2012, killings of 17-year-old Nick Brady and 18-year-old Haile Kifer.

Smith has claimed he feared the teens were armed and he shot them in self-defense. He says his Little Falls home had been broken into previously, and that he felt terrorized.

But authorities say Smith went too far when he continued to shoot the teens multiple times.

A jury will begin hearing the case Monday. They’ll decide whether Smith’s actions were that of a reasonable person or if the murders were premeditated.
