Cycling team looking to boost interest

After the second of three meetings to discuss a potential coed high school cycling team, the squad was hoping to garner a little more interest.
But the team’s head coach, Spencer Salmon, said he still thinks the Packers could be on track to join about 30 other teams from around Minnesota who participate in the Minnesota High School Cycling League’s mountain bike racing series next fall.
“It went smooth. They’re weren’t as many community members there as we would’ve liked but it’s one of three meetings,” Salmon said. “We expect the final one to have more people. Everything that we need in place is there. We just need to see what kids are going to come out.”
Salmon said the squad needs just one biker to have a team next season and he said cycling is a great activity for any student. Salmon emphasized the sport isn’t like down-hill mountain biking.
“It’s actually a safe event that’s very well organized,” he said. “It’s a great way for kids to get involved in their community.”
Salmon recently moved to Austin from Fargo, N.D., and he’s been involved in cycling for quite some time. He would love to have a group of cyclists to coach in the fall.
“I’m super excited to get some kids out and riding. It’s a lifetime sport,” Salmon said.
The time and place of the team’s third meeting has not yet been set.
