Music and romance

Two former Riverland students are returning to their alma mater for a special alumni show this week.
Bradley Weber and Lia Bauer Culbert are starring in “The Last 5 Years,” a contemporary romance that takes a look at a relationship between a writer, “Jamie,” and an actress, “Cathy,” told from both points of view.
“She tells it from the end to the beginning, and he tells it from the beginning to the end,” director Jerry Girton said.
“It’s not like most musicals, where they meet and fall in love.
“In the middle, they meet, and that’s were their wedding is,” he said.
Girton said there is very little dialogue between Weber, a 1996 graduate, and Culbert, a 1991 alumna.
“It’s a song-cycle show,” he said, explaining that each song tells a story.
“The Last 5 Years” is written by Jason Robert Brown and premiered in Chicago in 2001. Music will be provided by Scott Blankenbaker, piano; Sue Franklin, cello; and Emily Nelson, violin.
The show debuts at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and runs each evening through Saturday at Frank W. Bridges Theatre. “The Last 5 Years” is suitable for ages 16 and up.
Tickets are $15 and free for RCC students. All proceeds will benefit RCC music and theater scholarships.
