The Roosevelt Bridge is closing for construction Monday, but this will be the final pieces of a project that started in 2012.

After renovations closed the historic bridge for much of the last two summers, the bridge will be closed to traffic for about three to four weeks as crews work on the sidewalks, put up railings, repair old keystones and add some lights for walkers.

“We don’t want to leave it open for that work,” Public Works Director Mike Hanson said. “It shouldn’t take too long then we’ll be all done.”

The bridge spans the Cedar River on Fourth Street Southeast between Fourth Avenue and Sixth Avenue.

Hanson said the bridge will need to be closed for just a few weeks next year to finish the project.

This work marks the final steps in a historic renovation of the bridge. Previous estimates called for the project to cost about $3.6 million, with about $2.1 million in federal funding, $800,000 from state bonds and about $800,000 in local money.
