The Packers (4-13 overall, 1-13 Big Nine) were within 7-4 going into the seventh inning, but Mayo’s Trista Nierman blasted a 3-run homer to put the game away in the top of the seventh. Neirman finished the game with two homers and six RBIs.

Austin had pulled to within 7-4 in the fifth inning when Jordan Huntley hit a sacrifice fly.

“I always believe that we’re going to pull the big upset and it was no different tonight,” Austin head coach Cindy Owen said.

Austin has three games left in the regular season. It will host Rochester John Marshall Friday at 5 p.m. and it will play a doubleheader at Owatonna Saturday. The Section 1AAA tournament will begin Wednesday.

“We need to play strong these next three games,” Owen said. “We need momentum going into the tournament, because everybody will start with a zero-zero slate.”
