Deyvid Lopez may not be internationally famous yet, but he’s going to be well-known around Austin High School.

Austin High School students watched as Lopez was declared the AHS Artist of the Year Wednesday.

“I was very nervous, we had a lot of competition this year,” Deyvid Lopez said. Lopez won the $500 scholarship as the artist of the year for 2014.

The annual art show, held in the Austin High School’s Knowlton Auditorium, is the most attended assembly of the year, according to art teacher Barry Brobeck. The show has been running for 17 years, and each year has a different theme. This year there were seven nominees for artist of the year. Each student won a $50 scholarship. The event raised money for the scholarships through sponsors.

“We watch them throughout the senior year and see who stands out,” Brobeck said.

Brobeck, along with two other art teachers, Jake Levisen and Lisa Beschnett, chose Deyvid as the winner of the big award this year. Brobeck said he is proud of all his students and could not choose a favorite piece of art.

“There’s a lot of satisfaction with just getting to be a part of this,” Brobeck said. “Hopefully they walk away with a proud feeling.”

Lopez hopes to use the scholarship money toward school next year. He plans to go to Riverland Community College for two years and then pursue photojournalism in Winona.

After earning his degree, Lopez said he would like to travel. He was inspired by National Geographic and other magazines that use traveling photojournalists.

But for plans closer to the present, he intends to enter the Austin ArtWorks Festival this summer with some of his street photography. He also enjoys oil painting, but his passion is photography.
