Austin junior Carolyn Hackel broke a 31-year old AHS school record and the Packer girls track and field team took fourth at the Big Nine meet in Larry Gilbertson track and field Friday.

Hackel, a junior, won a Big Nine title in the long jump as she set a new Austin standard with a distance of 17 feet, 4.25 inches. Hackel went into the day confident in the long jump, but she had no idea that she had a chance of setting an Austin record.

“I went out there hoping to do the best I could and I’m pretty happy about it,” Hackel said. “[The long jump] has just kind of been coming along naturally. I didn’t really know the potential I had.”

Hackel had won Big Nine titles in the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash in the past, but she has focused on the long jump this season.

“I’m just trying to emphasize on what’s going well,” Hackel said. “Long jump was going well so that was my focus on the day.”

Austin eighth grader Paiton Schwab won the 1600-meter run by just one second over Emma Christensen of Rochester John Marshall.

“Pation just continues to drop her times,” Austin head coach Nancy Jones said. “I look at how young our team is. We really only had one senior competing. If these girls work hard and continue to put in time, we could see it go even better next year.”

Austin’s hurdlers had a solid day as Kendall Hackensmith took second in the 300-meter hurdles and Rachel Quandt took second in the 100-meter hurdles. Quandt, a sophomore, finished with a time of 16.22 seconds and Century’s Andi Jacobs won the meet with a time of 15.71 seconds.”We had a really nice day with the weather today and I’ve been working a lot more on my hurdles. I put it all together today and it worked out,” Quandt said. “[Jacobs is] definitely competition and it’s really a good push for me. We’re kind of friends outside of the track, so it’s a friendly competition.”

Madison Overby took third in the 1600-meter and 3200-meter runs for the Packers.
