ROCHESTER — There is something about Chatfield that just keeps the Rebels from getting their offense going.

Southland had its baseball season end in a 1-0 loss to the Gophers in a Section 1A elimination game in RCTC Saturday.

In three losses to Chatfield this season, the Rebels (18-5 overall) scored a total of just one run in 21 innings. On Saturday, Southland had a runner on second with two outs in the second and third innings, but it couldn’t punch in a run.

Chatfield (17-3 overall) had just four hits, but it made one of them count when Ethan Woltz lined a two-out, two-run double down the left field line to knock in the game’s only run in the top of the sixth inning.

“We out-hit them. They got the hit when they needed and we didn’t,” Southland head coach Scott Retterath said. “We had guys in scoring position early in the game, but we couldn’t get the big two-out hit. We had our chances, but in all of our losses, that’s kind of been our nemesis where we couldn’t get the hit when we needed it.”

Southland will have a lot of spots open next season as the team will graduate 10 seniors. Those seniors have been the core group for a squad that has played in the Section 1A tournament in each of the past three years.

“We’ve got a lot of holes to fill that’s for sure. We lose all three of our top pitchers. Hopefully somebody steps up,” Retterath said. “I told the boys after the game there’s a lot of teams that would love to be in our situation [this year]. We had a good season and it’s a tough pill to swallow, but that’s the way it goes.”

Taylar Schwartz picked up the loss for Southland as he allowed just three hits and three walks, while striking out six.

“Taylar, for the most part, pitched a really good game,” Retterath said.

Southland had five hits in the loss, but all of them were singles and the Rebels never had more than one hit in any inning.
