Bernard Joseph Schaefer, 82, passed away Saturday, June 14, 2014, at Golden Living Center East in Rochester, Minn. He passed away the same day as his partner in crime, his nephew Bruce Schaefer 41 years ago, and now they are on their way to trap shoot together.
Bernard was born on March 25, 1933, at home in Austin to Joseph and Celestine Schaefer.
He attended Kindergarten at Webster School and then Queen of Angels Catholic School.
Bernard was united in marriage to Patricia Kamp on Feb. 24, 1968. He worked for the Milwaukee Road Train Station de-icing box cars. Bernie would have his nephew Bruce come get unused ice to bring home to make homemade ice cream with his family. After his retirement he worked at Echo Lanes. He was a member of the Austin Moose Lodge and Austin Eagles Club for 51 years where he enjoyed volunteering and served on the board. Bernie and Pat enjoyed washing dishes and cleaning the dining room for many years at the Moose Lodge. Bernie loved spending summers up north at the Darrel and Rosie Danley’s fishing shack, he enjoyed trap shooting, watching softball games, bowling, attending Moose and Eagles functions, hording and collecting many priceless trinkets and treasures where he would find most often at Sally’s Boutique and Goodwill.
Bernie was preceded in death by his wife Pat in 2012, his parents Joseph and Celestine, brothers Leo, Ray, Wilfred Sisters, Margaret Whalen, Dorothy Schlicter, Rosemary Danley
Bernie is survived by his brother Sylvester and sister Helen Sershen, his special niece Nancy Schaefer King and husband Bradly King and many nieces and nephew and great nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at Mayer Funeral Home.
A Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at Mayer Funeral Home with Father Zink officiating.
