The Austin Post 91 Legion baseball team held Minnesota’s Mr. Baseball in check, but it couldn’t pick up a win as it lost both games of a doubleheader to the Rochester Redhawks in the Riverland baseball complex Tuesday.

Austin lost the opener 8-3 and it lost the nightcap 4-2 against the Redhawks, who have players from Rochester Mayo.

Brad Mathiowetz, who was recently named Mr. Baseball by the Minnesota Minute Men and the Minnesota Twins, went 1-for-6 on the day with two walks and zero RBIs, but the Redhawks’ other players did some damage.

“They’re probably one of the best offenses in the Big Nine,” said Nik Gasner, who took the loss in game one. “Everyone in their lineup can get a hit off of you and they always seem to get that timely hit when they have runners on.”

Gasner struck out Mathiowetz with the bases loaded in the third inning of game one, but the Redhawks came up with back-to-back two-out doubles to take a 4-0 lead.

“Nik threw well and he struck out one of the best hitters in the state and the next two guys get doubles,” Austin co-head coach Andy Swank said. “That’s what good teams do to you. He probably left four or five baseballs up the whole game and they took advantage of it.”

Gasner allowed five hits and three walks in four innings in the loss, but he feels like he’s getting closer to where he wants to be on the mound.

“I didn’t feel great, but I definitely felt better than I have lately. I was just trying to figure things out today,” Gasner said. “It was good progress, but I’ve still got a lot of work to do and I can get a lot better than that.”

Austin pitcher Isaac Schumacher held the Redhawks scoreless for five innings in the nightcap, but Rochester put together back-to-back two-out hits to take a 4-0 lead in the sixth.

Austin (2-3 overall) scored a pair of runs in the seventh on an RBI single by Daniel Bollingberg and run by Jason Stoulil on a wild pitch, but it wasn’t enough.

“Schumacher threw a very, very good game. We’re trying to get him to attack the strike zone and he did that. They just got to him a little bit at the end,” Swank said.

Post 91 stranded 10 runners on base in the first game and it was out-hit 16-8 in the doubleheader.

“You know you’re going to have to hit the baseball against them,” Swank said. “Our bats are just not there yet. We’d have a couple of good at-bats, but we couldn’t string them together.”
