The Austin Blue Sox bounced back from a rough SpamTown tournament opener in solid fashion as they topped the St. Paul Capitals 6-4 in Marcusen Park Friday.
Southland grad Lukas Anderson gave the Blue Sox four strong innings to get the win and he also went 4-for-4 at the plate with an RBI.
Anderson allowed zero earned runs in the first four innings until fatigue set in for him in the fifth.
“With pitching on the amateur level it’s a little bigger stage and a little extra adrenaline comes with it,” Anderson said. “I was feeling it for the first four innings and then in the fifth I started having some trouble.”
Anderson, who will play at UW-La Crosse next season, said that playing with the Blue Sox has been a boost for him.
“It’s really beneficial for me,” Anderson said. “I’m seeing teams with good batters one through nine instead of just having to worry about a couple guys.”
Brian Voigt, another Southland grad, came in and closed the door as he pitched three scoreless innings in relief for the Blue Sox (5-4 overall).
“Brian’s athletic and he stays active,” Blue Sox manager Josh Kunze said. “He’s no slouch. It was good to see him come out and kick the rust off and nail it down for us.”
Austin did most of its damage in the fourth inning when Quinn Yocom and Jamie Adams drew bases loaded walks and Cody Meyer knocked in a run on a ground-out to make it a 4-1 Blue Sox lead.
