A benefit for Val Pitzen raised more than volunteers were hoping for Friday evening.
One of the lead volunteers and a close friend of Pitzen’s, Denise Mayer, said volunteers had planned for about 500 people to show up at the Stacyville, Iowa, Community Center and hoped to raise $5,000 to $10,000. Instead, they served more than 700 meals, and even ran out of supplies by the end. The fundraiser raised about $37,000.
“It went fantastic,” Mayer said. “It was just more than we could have hoped for.”
Volunteers spread the word for the fundraiser through Facebook and flyers, and they were delighted by the turnout. Family, friends and former classmates all gave generously, and many volunteers worked long hours to make the fundraiser successful.
“It went smoothly, volunteers stepped up and just helped out,” Mayer said.
Vickie Bruggeman, another lead volunteer and family friend, was excited about the turnout.
“It was a terrific turnout; wonderful support,” Bruggeman said.
Bruggeman set up the silent auction, which held more than 200 items and was the source of about $10,000.
Mayer said Pitzen was unsure if she could stay throughout the fundraiser, but she was able to attend the entire event.
“She was just amazed at the outpouring of love through all the people that came and supported her,” Mayer said. “We can’t thank people enough for all the contributions and support.”
The benefit featured a bake sale, a silent auction, and a freewill donation meal of pulled pork sandwiches, beans, chips and a beverage. Money raised will go mainly to medical bills and hospital trips.
In December of 2013, Val experienced severe headaches that landed her in the emergency room, though she had issues pronouncing words before then.
Through an MRI and other tests, doctors found a brain tumor, which was removed in mid-December. Doctors also diagnosed Val with astrocytoma glioblastoma, a type of cancer.
