Classes off to a good start

The first class is in the books and now the Austin ArtWorks Center is looking down the road to it’s slate of art classes.
“It went really well,” Executive Director Jennie Knoebel said of Monday night’s Uncork and Create class, a combining of wine and art that was the center’s first class in the new location.
“We had good response from people and they had fun,” she continued. “We had about eight there and that was a good number for our first class.”
The target was 10 people with the option to increase to a space-allowing 24 people down the line, but considering the short notice the public had on Monday’s class, Knoebel is happy with the response.
“We just started promoting the classes,” Knoebel said. “I think the classes will get bigger once they are up and going.”
The reaction from those that attended Monday’s class gave it a positive aura.
“Everybody seemed to be having a really great time,” said Grace Heimsness who was on hand for Monday’s class for the ArtWorks Center.
Once the center hits its stride the variety of classes will vary more. Primarily the classes will revolve around painting with claywork classes beginning in August when the new kiln will be installed.
However, kicking off the classes with the Uncork and Create class was a simple choice.
“Whenever people find out we’re offering classes the first thing people have asked is if we will be offering wine and painting classes,” Knoebel said. “It’s the hot thing to do do.”
As far as what’s coming down the road, Knoebel said she can envision a time when the artist has input on what is taught.
“We’ve been talking about how we can make it different,” she said. “We may ask the artists what their thoughts are.”
For now though, the ArtWorks Center is keeping and even keel and starting things slower, especially with the building undergoing its final march toward completion. Knoebel said the center is more than halfway to completion with much of the work remaining taking place on the second floor.
“I think we’re going to gage a little bit to see how the summer goes,” Knoebel said. “It’s definitely going to be a delicate balance to offer enough, but don’t offer too much.
