Greyhounds blanked by Royals

The Austin Greyhounds ran into a buzz saw when they faced off against Rochester Royals’ ace Matt Meyer in Marcusen Park Sunday night.
The Hounds mustered just six hits and they struck out 14 times as Meyer, who has plenty of experience as a Minor League pitcher, pitched all nine innings of Austin’s 7-0 loss.
“He’s legit. He pretty much made us look silly today at the plate,” Hounds manager John Frein said. “You’ve got to give him credit, the guy threw well.”
The Royals were led by the hitting of Dave Adams as he went 3-for-3 with five RBIs and Rochester held a 4-0 lead after three innings. The Hounds (8-8 overall, 0-1 Section) didn’t have a lot of scoring opportunities, but their best chance came in the fifth when they had runners on second and third with one out. In the sixth Austin had runners on first and second with one out but it couldn’t score.
“Now we know what we’ve got to beat,” Frein said. “They’re one of the better teams we’ve played and that’s one of the better pitchers we’ve faced.”
Shortstop Henry Fleek of Albert Lea stepped up for Austin as he went 2-for-4 with a double in the loss.
“He’s a scrappy player and a good player,” Frein said. “He makes a lot of plays and he had some good at-bats today. He’s good at getting on base.”
