Schafer: Volunteers make the senior center go round

Published 1:23 pm Monday, July 21, 2014

Wikipedia says, “Volunteering is generally considered an altruistic activity and is intended to promote goodness or improve human quality of life. In return, this activity can produce a feeling of self-worth and respect. There is no financial gain involved for the individual. Volunteering is also renowned for skill development, socialization, and fun. It is also intended to make contacts for possible employment. It is helping, assisting, or serving another person or persons without pay. Many volunteers are specifically trained in the areas they work.”

The senior center functions because we have great volunteers. You will see these volunteers when you enter the door at the senior center sitting at the front desk answering phones, in the coffee shop serving you or maybe picking you up for your ride to your doctor appointment.

There are many other areas we utilize volunteers. All of our volunteers are altruistic (showing a disinterested and selfless concern for the well-being of others).

At 9 a.m. on Friday we are gathering those volunteers for an appreciation. We will have free coffee and muffins. Mike Maas from RSVP and Catholic Charities will be our speaker.

Mike will give you all the benefits of the RSVP program and help you sign up for them. There is no cost. We would love to see you if you volunteer for the senior center or if you are interested in becoming a volunteer.

Please sign up so we have a count for muffins, by stopping by the front desk or calling 507-433-2370, extension 0.

Don’t forget our coffee shop where every day you can have homemade soup for $1 and a sandwich for 50 cents. Tuesday, we will have tuna noodle hotdish in the coffee shop starting at 11:30 a.m. for $2.You are always welcome at the center.
