It started about as bad as it could, but the Grand Meadow football team rebounded and beat Spring Grove 47-19 on the road to snap a three-game losing streak Friday.

After Spring Grove opened the game with a 60-yard scoring play, the Superlarks fumbled, and Spring Grove took a 13-0 lead when one of it’s offensive linemen picked up a loose ball and ran it in for a score.

Caleb Leichtnam, who ran 12 times for 117 yards and two TDs, returned the following kickoff for a score — the first of 47 straight points for GM (4-3 overall).

“The way we’ve been playing lately, we needed this win,” GM head coach Gary Sloan said. “Caleb’s play was a big boost for us.”

Defensively, the Superlarks stepped up and shut down Spring Grove (3-4 overall) for the second and third quarters.

“Our senior linebacker Jon Jacobson made a couple of big plays in a row and that energized the whole defense,” Sloan said.

The win gives GM the inside track on hosting Spring Grove in the first round of the playoffs, which begin Oct. 21.

Killian Smith had 82 yards rushing on nine carries for GM with a two TD and a receiving TD, Quentin Stejskal had 11 carries for 64 yards, and Michael Gehling had a 10-yard touch down run.
