Best Bets: A packed weekend at the fair

Enjoy food and fun at the Mower County Fair this weekend. Ride some new rides on GoldStar Amusements’ new midway and make sure to look at all the displays and animals. With everything offered, there’s sure to be fun for the whole family.
1. 130th Annual Mower County Free Fair
All day, Tuesday-Sunday, Mower County Fairgrounds
Affordable fun for everyone. Youth and open livestock shows, the FFA Children’s Farm Yard, Creative Arts Building, Horticulture Building all open, free stage entertainment, arts/crafts, horticulture, children’s farmyard, games, midway and your favorite fair foods. 2. Grand entertainment
Thursday-Sunday in the grandstand of the Mower County Fair
There’s much more entertainment to come this weekend in the grandstand.
The NTPA Tractor Pull is at 7 p.m. tonight. At 7 p.m. Friday, there will be a free performance by Time Machine. There’s the MCF Truck and Tractor Pull at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, followed later by Great Frontier Bull Riding at 7 p.m. Masters of Disasters Demo Derby closes out the grandstand entertainment at 2 p.m. Sunday.
3. Annual Brat Feed
11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, The Bridge, 108 Oakland Avenue East
This fundraiser for The Bridge will offer brats, potato salad and a beverage. A $6 donation is requested. For tickets and more information, call 507-433-5646.
4. 4-H’ers keep busy
Thursday-Sunday, Mower County Fairgrounds
Area 4-H’ers will continue to be busy at the fair this weekend. The cat and pet show is at 10 a.m. Friday, and the Livestock Ribbon Auction starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, along with several other events.
5. Classic Car Show
12 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Mower County Fairgrounds
Get ready to look at some old, new and fancy cars at the 2014 Classic Car Show.
6. Austin Big Band
4 p.m., Saturday, Mower County Fairgrounds
Come listen to the local Austin Big Band as the fair takes place this weekend. Don’t forget to enjoy the animals, food and fun while you’re there.
7. Calling contest
2 p.m. Saturday at the fairgrounds
This year’s Cedar River Longbeards JAKES calling contest is calling on all contestants age 17 or younger to compete and be judged on a minimum of three calls: cluck, purr and plain yelp of a hen. Any slate, tube, wingbone, diaphragm, push pull or box call may be used to simulate turkey calls. Registration forms will be available during the fair. No entry fee will be required and prizes will be awarded.
8. Faith at the fair
10:30 a.m. Sunday at the fair square stage
Our Savior’s Lutheran Church will hold its annual “Worship at the Fair,” with Judy and Lee Bjorndal from Austin leading the congregation in old-time gospel singing during the service. In case of heavy rain, the service will be held at the church, 1600 W. Oakland Ave. in Austin. The public is invited.
