Rebels stand tall in victory over Wabasha-Kellogg

The Southland football team just needed to watch the right movie to get going.

After dropping their opener at Caledonia, the Rebels watched ‘The Game Stands Tall’ as a team this week and it certainly paid off for them as they topped Wabasha-Kellogg (0-2 overall, 0-2 SFA Blue) 30-18 in Adams Friday.

“I truly believe [watching that movie] had a big effect on us, because they found out some things about themselves,” Southland head coach Shawn Kennedy said. “They were buying into what is being said in the movie.”

The Rebels (1-1 overall, 1-1 SFA Blue) trailed 12-0 in the first quarter, but they turned things around by going back to the old style of grind-it-out Southland football.

The Rebels finished with 280 rushing yards and Nick Finbraaten and Lucas Mandt had first half rushing TDs to put them up 14-12 at halftime after there was an hour weather delay in the first half.

“After that first quarter, we played like the Southland Rebels of old. We played physical and we really did a nice job,” Kennedy said.

The Rebels led 30-12 late in the game before WK scored a TD.
