Dorothy P. Schloo, 94 of Austin, Minnesota, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2014, at Sacred Heart Care Center in Austin.
Dorothy Pauline (Newkirk) Schloo was born on Jan. 4, 1920, on the family farm in rural Mower County. Dorothy was the youngest of eight children born to Adolph and Mary (Klenk) Newkirk. Dorothy attended school in Dexter and Elkton. On Sept. 17, 1939, she married Allen Henry Schloo at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dexter Township.
Allen and Dorothy made their home on the family farm, in rural Dexter Township. They were blessed with three children, Harold, Gary and Marlene. Dorothy always said she was not a housewife; she was a farmer’s wife. Allen died in a farm accident on Oct. 31, 1982. Dorothy continued to live on the farm until 1990, when she moved into “town” — Austin.
Over the years, Dorothy had many hobbies including baking, gardening, reading, dancing and doing word find puzzles, and most of all, a good game of cards. For many years, Dorothy enjoyed her friends and neighbors at Oak Park Village. She was active in her church and the Mower County Senior Center.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Allen; son, Harold; brothers, Milo, Gilbert, Melvin and Edwin Newkirk; and sisters Esther Palmer, Leona Skaran and Lucile Brinkman.
Dorothy is survived by her children: Gary (Terri) Schloo of Austin; and Marlene (John) Aurit, of Austin; daughter-in-law: SuAnn (Harold, deceased) Schloo, of Bloomington, Minnesota; grandchildren: John (Angela) Schloo, of Bloomington; Erin (Stuart) Innes, of Fridley, Minnesota; Mark (Alex) Schloo, of Pine Island, Minnesota; Scott (Sarah) Aurit, of Omaha, Nebraska; and Brett (Becky) Aurit, of St. Paul, Minnesota; step-grandchildren: Robert McKee of Austin; Lindsey (Beau) Webber of Fridley; and Tina (Mitch Mead) McKee of Austin; great-grandchildren: Addison, Annemarie, Brady, Ethan, Elliot, Caleb, Tristan, J.P., Gianna, and Elizabeth; step-great-grandchildren: Jordan, William, Harley, Kinsley, Lucy and Norah; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Dexter Township, 22980 630th Avenue, with the Rev. David C. Fleischmann officiating. Interment will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and at the church on Saturday for one hour before the service. Memorials are preferred to the Mower County Senior Center or to Trinity Lutheran Church, Dexter, Minnesota.
