Austin High School’s bicycle team completed its first race over the weekend.

Though none of the eight riders finished high enough to earn Austin team points, the team learned much from its first race at Buck Hill in Burnsville on Sunday, according to Team Manager Dick Schindler.

“They seemed to have a lot of fun,” he said.

Bicycling as a sport is relatively new in Minnesota. The state has 40 schools that participate in races, a large increase in interest considering there were no teams in Minnesota three years ago.

Four Austin seventh-graders, a ninth-grader and three sophomores competed in the race, Schindler said.

The next race takes place Sunday, Sept. 21, in St. Cloud.
