They seized the moment.
The Riverland volleyball players used a come-from-behind win in game one as momentum to sweep Minnesota West 3-0 in Austin Saturday.
Riverland won the match by scores of 31-29, 25-14, 25-17.
“It was a great win for us,” Riverland head coach Helen Jahr said.
Krissy Schemmel led the way for the Blue Devils with five ace serves, 26 set assists and 14 digs. Ashley Lau added 13 digs, 10 kills, two blocks and three ace serves; Tiffany Preuss had 12 assists, 12 digs, seven kills and one block, while Brooke Monson had 16 kills, three blocks and 10 digs.
In game one, Minnesota West played its way to a 6-0 lead, then led 13-8, 17-11, 20-15, 21-17 and then 23-19 before the Blue Devils made their move.
“That’s when we started to climb back, and it was just knock down, drag out banging the ball back and forth until we won 31-29,” Jahr said.
The second and third games were nothing like the first, as Riverland rebounded from the slow start to lead early in the finals two game and never looked back.
“Krissy Schemmel had some key serves for us,” Jahr said. “She got five aces on a very tough defensive team.
The win puts the Blue Devils at 11-10 overall and 2-5 in the MCAC South and eyeing a possible state playoff spot.
“I think the state trip is up for grabs,” Jahr said.
