RAPID CITY, S.D. — A Minnesota behavioral pediatrician who was on a camping trip in the Black Hills is dead after being involved in a motorcycle crash.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol says 71-year-old Ernest Swihart was heading down a hill, when he entered a curve, locked the brakes of his motorcycle, lost control and crashed into a tree near Pactola Reservoir.

The man from Minnetonka, Minnesota, died in the helicopter that was transporting him to a Rapid City hospital.

Lt. David Berkley says passers-by lifted the motorcycle off Swihart, who was wearing a helmet.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports Swihart won a Minnesota Book Award in 1997 for co-authoring “The Manipulative Child.” In 2011, he appeared on television on ABC’s “Nightline” to discuss the use of medication for children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
