Civil War stories come to Austin

Published 10:17 am Tuesday, September 23, 2014

Most people know the history behind the Civil War, but many may not know the individual stories that went along with the war. John Christgau is coming to Austin to share one of those stories.

The Mower County Historical Society invites the public to bring a lunch on Thursday for the latest presentation of the 2014 Lunchbox History Series. Starting at noon, Christgau share about a fascinating incident that occurred during the Civil War involving a runaway slave, soldiers from Minnesota, a daring rescue, and the political fallout from it all.

Christgau is the author of a book on this subject titled “Incident at the Otterville Station: A Civil War Story of Slavery and Rescue.”
