The Packers snapped a four-game losing skid and they beat the team that ended their season last year when they topped Byron (3-7-2 overall) 6-0 in a boys soccer game in Art Hass Stadium Saturday.

Austin (4-7-2 overall) led just 1-0 at the half, but it used a flurry of four goals in four minutes to ice the game down the stretch.

“Each team presents a different defense and you need to keep attacking and keep going with that mentality that eventually they’re going to break,” Austin head coach Jens Levisen said. “Eventually they broke and we got a few.”

Jeremy Olmsted hit a 20-yard shot with 10:45 left in the first half to get the Packers on the board and he scored on a breakaway on an assist from Roel Torres to make it a 3-0 game with 10:14 left in the contest.

“We really needed this,” Olmsted, who also had an assist, said. “It got way easier. We just kept on scoring and scoring. We just kept our heads up and went for it.”

Austin dominated the ball as it out-shot the Bears 17-3 in the win. The Packer defense cracked down on Byron whenever it tried to advance the ball into Austin territory.

“We kept up the pressure and that was a big thing in practice this week. We pressured up top and we minimized their shots. It was a must win with our record and it was a big section opponent,” Austin defender Ryan Kempen said. “We knew we had to beat them.”

Ochan Ochogi scored a pair of goals for the Packers, Alex Evenson scored his first career varsity goal for Austin and Levi Vierkandt scored off an assist from Torres. Sean Baker also had an assist for the Packers.

The lop-sided win was a refreshing one for an Austin team that has had to sweat out a few games this season.

“We’ve had so many games that have been so close that we’ve lost,” Levisen said. “We’ve had lots of frustration. We wanted to come out today and be strong. We didn’t want it to be close, because we’ve been in gams where teams have tied it up on us.”
