Have a fun, safe Halloween

In a day’s time, the night and streets will be given over to little munchkins, goblins, princesses and heroes as Austin’s children hit the town, heading door-to-door in search of treats.
It should go without saying that extra precaution should be taken by motorists Friday to watch for Halloween trick-or-treaters as they make their rounds.
Watch your speed and avoid distractions. The night is alive with the spooky fun of the holiday, and everybody wants to avoid a real nightmare.
The same word of caution can be extended to parents who will be out walking with children. On their website, “Reader’s Digest” gives seven tips on being safe this Halloween.
1. Plan a route in advance
2. Wear comfy shoes
3. Stay well lit
4. Make sure all costumes are short
5. Avoid masks
6. Use flexible props
7. Check your child’s candy

But Halloween can also be about giving. Austin High School’s National Honor Society, Youth Leadership and REACH will also be out going door-to-door, trick-or-treating for food items for the local food shelf and weekend backpack program.
Remember the good these students are doing and help out by donating things like servings of applesauce, canned fruit, easy to prepare meals such as Hormel Compleats, peanut butter or cereal.
LIke most people, we here at the Herald want you to have a safe and enjoyable Halloween as you haunt Austin’s streets. Take an extra second, look both ways and have a hauntingly good time.
