ST. PAUL — A Minnesota woman has saved the life of a hummingbird that somehow got off course and didn’t make it back to Mexico before wintry weather hit.

Terri Walls called animal experts when she noticed the rufous hummingbird at her nectar feeder last week. The St. Paul woman used a rescue cage to capture the bird and brought it to a Roseville wildlife hospital. The bird will eventually be brought to Arizona so it can continue south along its annual migratory trek.

Jessika Madison-Kennedy, a licensed wildlife rehabilitator who’s caring for the bird, says the bird would have died had it not been for Walls.

Minnesota has had only been about a dozen rufous hummingbird sightings within the past 40 years.
