The Austin boys basketball team had a 43-game winning streak in the Big Nine conference come to an end when it lost 38-35 in overtime in Faribault Tuesday.
The Packers (1-1 overall, 1-1 Big Nine) scored the first four points of overtime to go up 35-31 after Levi Vierkandt hit a jump shot and Nik Gasner came up with a lay-up, but the Falcons (1-2 overall, 1-2 Big Nine) closed the game on a 7-0 run to get the win.
Austin shot just 3-for-25 on 3-pointers and it was out-rebounded 44-24 in the loss.
“I give Faribault credit, they mixed up their defense and we jacked up a lot of threes,” Austin head coach Kris Fadness said. “I think we’re a good shooting team, but we didn’t make too many tonight.”
Austin trailed 15-7 at the half, but it took a 31-29 lead with 1:30 left in the game when Gach Gach, who scored 19 points, scored on a put-back. Faribault tied the game when it responded with a score.
Austin scoring: Gach Gach, 19; Zach Coffey, 6; Levi Vierkandt, 6; Noah Brehmer, 2; Nik Gasner, 2; free throws: 50 percent (2-for-4)
