Letter: Don’t rush through changes

I have just watched the latest Austin City Council Meeting online and felt compelled to write this letter to the editor.
The discussion about the proposed rental ordinance (that for some reason needs to be pushed through by the end of this year) was embarrassing to watch.
Council member Enright displayed an emotional and inaccurate reprimand to each member who did not support her point of view on this issue — the purpose of these reprimands resulted in name calling — not in an attempt to provide more accurate information regarding this issue.
As a realtor in this area for 19 years, I can state that anytime an entity proposes to regulate someones property rights, as in the case of this ordinance, we need to tread lightly and act only and when all of the information is in place.
Clearly this proposal has a long way to go to before it can do what it is intended to do, successfully.
Re-defining property rights is not an issue that you rush through because of a calendar year ending.
I praise the dissenting council members for keeping their cool under the intimidating atmosphere of the meeting,
And for having the insight to look forward in a way that does not discriminate or limit a property owners rights.
Please view this exchange for yourself and form your own opinion.

Austin realtor
