HAYFIELD — The Southland boys basketball team had trouble finding offense until it was too late as it lost 65-59 to Tri City United in the opening round of the Hayfield Holiday tournament Monday.
The Rebels (5-6 overall) will play Kenyon-Wanamingo in the third place game in Hayfield Tuesday at 6 p.m.
On Monday, Southland forced 25 turnovers, but it still trailed 57-41 with less than four minutes left in the game. The Rebels stormed back to pull as close as 64-59 when Jackson Koenigs hit a 3-pointer with 11.6 seconds left, but there wasn’t enough time left for a comeback.
“We’ll grow from this,” Southland head coach Matt Webber said. “The biggest thing is to be disappointed, but be hungry tomorrow. Hopefully we come back strong.”
TCU (7-4 overall) opened on a strong note as it jumped out to a 12-2 lead start the game, but the Rebels fought back to tie things up at the break. TCU took an early lead in the second half and it never looked back.
“We started slow out early and then we missed a lot of easy buckets,” Webber said. “The bottom line is we didn’t make some easy shots, but I like how we battled back in the first half.”
James Landherr continues to show improvement after coming back from an injury. The junior guard had 14 points for the Rebels Monday and Josh Anderson added 23 points and eight rebounds.
