Letter: State should rethink sex abuse laws

Child sex offenders are getting off way too easily with their prison sentences.
Since when is it okay to take away a child’s innocence? Seeing the so called “sentences” that Mower County and the surrounding area gives to its sexual predators is sickening.
Jail and prison time need to be raised for sex offenders.
New Jersey’s governor Chris Christie signed a bill called the Jessica Lunsford Act. It is a bill that sentences anyone with aggravated sexual assault towards a person the age of 13 or less to a minimum of 25 years in prison. (Matt Friedman, The Star-Ledger, 2014) Although this is a small step, I think this is what every state needs to start with. We then need to start making further steps for different kinds of sexual abuse and make sure the sentencing fits the crime. It is time that Minnesota starts protecting its victims of sexual abuse.
