The Historic Paramount Theatre will host Prudence Johnson and Dan Chouinard’s “Flappers, Miners, & Moonshiners: A Musical History of 1920s Minnesota” at 2 p.m. on Sunday. The show is free with a $10 suggested donation.

Johnson and Chouinard, who have performed several times on Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion,” will take the crowd back to Minnesota’s Jazz Age. The duo will share songs, vintage photographs, and many stories of life on the farm, in the nightclubs of St. Paul and the mining towns of the Iron Range.

Austin Artworks Education and Marketing Coordinator Grace Heimsness is excited to see the artist perform.

“It just seems like she’s got a good range,” Heimsness said. “I think she’ll be really fun to watch. She’s a natural performer and she’s a veteran performer.”

Johnson and Chouinard are taking a tour through Minnesota, starting on Oct. 3, 2014, in Bemidji and continuing through Feb. 28 in Lanesboro.

Johnson boasts a wide history of performances, from honky-tonks to Carnegie Hall, the theater stage to the silver screen, and the Midwest to the Middle East.

Along with being a regular guest on “A Prairie Home Companion,” she has broadcast on National Public Radio stations and appeared in Robert Altman’s 2006 “A Prairie Home Companion” movie.

Johnson has worked with Chouinard before, collaborating on “Gershwin” in 2004, and co-writing “Another Song About Paris.”

Heimsness said the concert will appeal to all ages for people, especially those who enjoy history.

“It’s a nice, fun look at what our cities and what our state used to be like,” Heimsness said.

She said the group differs from others because audience members will learn the history of their state as they enjoy the music.

“You’re going to learn a little something while you’re there,” she said.
