FARIBAULT — The No. 5 seeded Packers finished with a flurry, but it was too little, too late as they saw their season come to an end in a 4-3 loss in a Section 1A girls hockey quarterfinal game in Faribault Wednesday.

Brandi Myers scored a goal to bring Austin within 4-3 with 37 seconds left in the game and the Packers (11-13-2 overall) had three more good looks at the net before time ran out on them. It was the third time Austin lost to the Falcons (13-12 overall) this season.

“Faribault had a really good team this year. They skate hard and they have some good offensive girls,” Austin head coach Brett Vesel said. “We played pretty good hockey, we just had a couple of tough shots that didn’t go in. It was pretty tight there for awhile and it was tough to lose.”

The game was tied at 2-2 headed into the third period and Austin had a couple of early breakaway chances, but the Falcons took the momentum when Lexus Tage and Alexis Ferris each scored goals in a 41-second span to make it 4-2 Faribault.

Austin had tied the game at 2-2 when Chloe Summerfield scored her second goal of the night on a short-handed one-timer from Madison Overby.

“We talked about what we wanted to do and they went out there and did what we wanted them to do,” Vesel said. “We practiced hard for the last couple of days and we asked them to do a couple of things differently. I’m really proud of what they did and how we finished up this year.”

Mara Overby had 29 saves for the Packers.

Austin will graduate two seniors in Mackenzie Trimble and Haley Tigner and Vesel is hoping his team can come back strong next season.

“It’s what we put in during the offseason that’s going to make a difference,” Vesel said. “We’ve made some huge strides this year, but now what are we going to do with it? That’s the key. We’ve got some really great kids that will hopefully just get after it this summer.”
