History is getting happy this Monday at the Hormel Historic Home.
The fourth monthly History Happy Hour will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. this Monday at the Hormel Historic Home in Austin. This month, Mower County Historical Society Director John Haymond will speak about the Sioux uprising, also known as the United States Dakota War of 1862.
“It focuses on the trials that happened after the war, what happened, what when on, and some of the more unknown things that can be found in the historical records,” Haymond said.
History Happy Hour is a partnership between the Mower County Historical Society, the Austin Public Library and the Historic Hormel House.
“We’ve kind of set up a three-way working relationship and it’s been going really well,” Haymond said.
Haymond is excited to talk about the Sioux uprising, though he said it’s very controversial due to the question of who is telling the story. The event will have a cash bar and there will be a question and answer session at the end.
“It’s drinks, appetizers and history,” Haymond laughed. “It’s a good combination.”
Past events have had good turnouts, and Haymond hopes to see more people at this month’s event. Next month will feature television shows from the 1950s. The event is open to the public and is free to Hormel Historic Home, Friends of the Library and Mower County Historical Society members, and costs $3 for non-members.
