Dick Henry Morgan, 87

Dick Henry Morgan was born April 13, 1927, in El Monte, California, the son of Stephen and Minnie (Bemoll) Morgan. He died Feb. 13, 2015.

At age 17, after graduating from El Monte, California, high school in 1944, Dick signed with the New York Yankee organization to play baseball at AAA Kansas City. In 1945 he served in the U.S. Navy. After he returned from the service, Dick played professional baseball in Norfolk, Virginia, Ventura, California, Victoria, Canada, Beaumont, Texas, Muskegon, Michigan, and Edmonton, Canada, for 10 years until 1954.

During the winter months he attended Chaffee Jr. College. After graduating, he attended to Whittier College, Whittier, California, graduating in 1952 with a bachelor’s degree.

Dick played semi-pro ball in the Southern Minnesota League, including Mankato, Albert Lea and Austin from 1955 to 1962.

Dick was united in marriage to JoAnn Munson on May 22, 1955, at Hartland Synod Lutheran Church, Hartland, Minnesota. They made their home in Austin for 33 years. Dick retired from Woodruff Co. in 1987, and they moved to Northfield, Minnesota, in 1992. He attended many activities at St. Olaf and Carleton colleges. Dick especially enjoyed all of the sporting events involving his seven grandchildren. He was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife JoAnn; children: Gary (Mary), Minnesota; Stephen (Lynn), Wisconsin; Rick, Arizona; Joni (Michael) Roseri, Illinois; grandchildren: Richard (Angie), Todd, Brian, Samantha, Andrew, Jacob (Amber), Christopher Roseri, Keith Karpinske (Kari, Max and Jack); and great-grandchildren: Zoe, Hope, and Lincoln. He is also survived by sister-in-law Wanda Morgan, California.

He was preceded in death by siblings: Tom Morgan, Jack Morgan, and Beverly Wilson.

A celebration of Dick’s life will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2015, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 418 Sumner St., Nfld. Interment will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, Northfield. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Prairies Edge Humane Society, 680 Professional Drive, Northfield, MN 55057, www.prairiesedgehs.org.
