Curling starting March 9

Anyone interested in curling?
We will be starting on Monday, March 9 at Riverside Arena. Stop in our office and sign up.
The cost is $70 and will run seven weeks through April 20. Curling times will be 6 and 8 p.m. with some set up necessary prior to each night. We can hold 24 people at each time slot and will fill the 6 p.m. slot first. Sign up as a team of four or an individual and we will make teams.
Terms you will hear at curling include stone, hack, button, hog line, the house, slider and broom. Each team consists of four players, the skip, the vice skip, the second and the lead. The skip whose job is to communicate the turn, line and weight (speed) for the lead teammate throwing the first two stones and so on. Strategies taken in to consideration involve taking out your opponent’s stone, guarding your point or a tap. Baseball has innings, curling plays ends with a typical game of eight or 10 ends.
The Riverside Figure Skating Club will host their 41st annual Ice Show with this year’s theme being “Riverside Dance Party” at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 7 and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 8 at at Riverside Arena. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $8 for seniors and students, $10 for adults. Get tickets in advance from our area skaters for a $2 discount. Austin Youth Hockey members will have an opportunity for some fun 3-on-3 cross ice for the mites, squirts and U10 girls 5:45 to 6:30 p.m. starting Tuesday, March 10 through April 14 and 10:15 to 11 a.m. on Saturday mornings March 14 to April 18. The cost is $45 per player, you must have full gear. Please register at the Park and Recreation office prior to March 10.
For the older youth hockey members, peewee, U14 girls, bantams and high school players they will play full ice 11:15 to 12:15 p.m. on Saturday’s beginning March 14 through April 18. The cost is $40 per person; you must have full gear as well. Please pre-register at the Park and Recreation office by March 13.
We will hold another learn to skate partnering with the Bruins and Youth Hockey beginning from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11, at Riverside Arena. The cost is $30. Participants will receive a punch card for six free public skate uses. This is open to all ages.
Think spring and mark your calendar for the free baseball clinic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 14 at Austin High School.
The Austin All Stars, Austin High School and Austin Youth Baseball are partnering again this year and inviting all area kids ages 9 to 13.
There will also be a short break at noon for participates to enjoy a free lunch. A parent must register the participant at the door the day of the event. There will not be a pre-registration. Participants will need to have their own glove and tennis shoes, bats and helmets will be provided or they can bring their own.
Public skate times at Packer Arena are: 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. Wednesday; 1 to 3 p.m. this Sunday and 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. Packer will then close and public skate will move to Riverside the week after the figure skate show. The cost to skate is $4. If you need skates we have rentals for $1.
Adult open hockey is 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday. We have added a date this Monday from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m. In March we will move to Riverside Arena. Watch Facebook and check the city website at www.ci.austin.mn.us for the calendar.
The Austin Bruin’s next home games will be Friday and Saturday March 27 and 28 when they host Aberdeen. Puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
