Harriet F. Smith, 88, of Austin, Minnesota, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2015, at Sacred Heart Care Center.
Harriet was born on Sept. 13, 1926, in Thorp, Wisconsin, to Frank and Frances (Klak) Dobiesz. She graduated from Eau Claire High School in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, in 1945. Harriet graduated from Kahler Methodist Nursing School in Rochester, Minnesota, in 1948. Harriet married Bernard “Bernie” William Smith on Dec. 30, 1950, at Sacred Heart Church, Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Harriet used her skills learned as a nurse to care for family, friends and those who were in need. Harriet worked as a nurse at St. Olaf Hospital, and served as the director of nursing at Comforcare and Gerard Schools of Austin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Bernard; and two sisters: Frances Fygiel and Sister Frances Regis.
Harriet is survived by her daughter Barbara Chromy, Austin, Minnesota; sons: Thomas (Barbara) Smith, Stillwater, Minnesota, and Timothy (Lynn) Smith, Highland Ranch, Colorado; grandchildren: Theresa Chromy, Austin, Minnesota, and Michael Chromy, Minneapolis, Minnesota; nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 6, at St. Edward Catholic Church with Father James Steffes officiating. There will be a Carmelite prayer service at the church at 9:30 a.m. on Friday with visitation to follow until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to Carmelite Brothers at Annunciation Hermitage in Austin. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
