Big win on the big stage; LP bulls past Mountain Iron-Buhl to advance to Class A semifinals

MINNEAPOLIS — The Lyle-Pacelli girls basketball team made its first game at the Class A state tournament count when it blew past No. 3 seeded Mountain Iron-Buhl 66-47 in the Class A Minnesota Girls State Basketball Tournament quarterfinals in Mariucci Arena at the University of Minnesota Thursday.

LP led by double digits for the entire second half and it never trailed in the entire contest.

The Athletics will play No. 2 seeded Ada-Borup in the Class A semifinals at 2 p.m. today.

Although they weren’t seeded, LP showed no fear.

“We felt like we came out of perhaps the toughest section in Class A, but at the same time we’ve never been here before. It’s fair that we were unseeded and we’ve got to prove ourselves,” LP head coach Justin Morris said. “We came out and played real well and I think we made a statement. We’ve got one step down and maybe two more to go.”

Madison Truckenmiller had 16 points and nine rebounds for LP, and Sarah Holtz had 15 points and 12 rebounds for LP, which had four players in double figures scoring.
