Austin Public School students are raising money to support those with epilepsy and those who have seizures.

The Austin Area Learning Center is hosting its annual variety show at 7 p.m. Thursday in Christgau Hall to raise funds for MAAP Stars and the Minnesota Epilepsy Foundation. Ticket sales benefit the MAAP Stars program, which offers at-risk students leadership opportunities. Concession sales and donations will benefit the Minnesota Epilepsy Foundation to sponsor a camper to attend Camp Oz, a week-long camp for children who suffer from seizure disorders.

Purple Day was created in 2008 by Australian Cassidy Morgan, who wanted the day to promote epilepsy awareness world-wide.  Each March 26, people in countries around the world are invited to wear purple and teach each other about epilepsy. Epilepsy affects one in 26 people and does not have a cure at this point. ALC students will wear purple at the variety show and share facts and information about epilepsy with patrons.

“We are very excited to be raising money for such a great cause,” Eliza Kelly, MAAP Stars Advisor, said in a press release. “Camp Oz is a wonderful experience for children with seizures. It offers a safe, fun environment where these kids can have fun without worrying about their next seizure. The Minnesota Epilepsy foundation provides 24/7 medical staffing so parents can rest assured that their children are getting excellent care.”
