Duct-tape isn’t only for “The Red Green Show.”

Austin’s Salvation Army is holding a duct-tape fundraiser where people can purchase two-foot pieces of duct tape for $1 to tape a Salvation Army employee to the wall.

“People can buy one strip, they can buy 50 strips, whatever they want,” Volunteer Special Event Coordinator Kristine Maier said.

The event raises money for the Austin Salvation Army. People can go to the Salvation Army Thrift Store to vote for free for one of seven candidates to get taped to the wall through April 15.

From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 2, people can purchase a piece of duct tape and the employee with the most votes will be taped to the wall in the Thrift Store at 2 p.m.

This is the first year for the duct-tape fundraiser. Maier came up with the idea while looking at what others have done, and she found a teacher had done something similar before. She wanted to get people interested and try something new.

“Because it’s different and it’s fun,” Maier said.

“And [people] can come in and see someone plastered to the wall,” she added with a laugh.

The goal is to raise $2,500 — which is what the teacher from the original fundraiser raised — which means they would have to sell 2,500 pieces of duct tape. Maier said the employees are already having fun with the fundraiser.

“They’re all having lots of fun with it,” she said. “They’re convincing a lot of the customers to vote for a different person.”

They aren’t the only ones excited. Maier said one little girl already told them she is “saving her dollar” for the duct-taping day.

Organizers planned the fundraiser for the same day as the city-wide sales and will also be selling new and used items at the Thrift Store. There will also be a bake sale, walking tacos and hot dogs. Maier said there is space open for vendors, as well.

“Any vendors that are looking to sell, they can definitely contact me,” Maier said. “We’d like to get a bunch of them.”
