A rural Austin homeowner interrupted a burglary at his home Monday, according to local law enforcement.

Mower County Sheriff Terese Amazi said a homeowner drove to the south side of his residence at the 50000 block of 245th Street at about 2:30 p.m. Monday when he spotted a dark car in his driveway.

The man spoke with a woman holding two small dogs in the car, who told him she and her boyfriend were looking to buy pigeons from a man named Bill. At the same time, the homeowner spotted a scruffy-looking white male in his 30s, with tattoos on his arms, entering the home.

Amazi said the homeowner confronted the suspect inside his home. The man left the house, got into the car and drove south on County Road 61. Later, the homeowner found some of his wife’s jewelry was missing.

Deputies have no suspects at this time, according to Amazi. She cautioned residents to keep their doors locked and to immediately call 911 if there’s any sign of criminal activity, as the homeowner first called his neighbor about the burglary before he called police.
