AHS students receive superior ratings on artwork

Twelfth-grader Colten Detwiler’s pointillism piece called “Gorilla” earned the Best of Show award at the section 1AA Minnesota State High School League Visual Arts Festival in April. It is on display at the Perpich Center for the Arts through May 16. It also received a superior rating. The drawing completed by stippling the image (only using dots) with Micron artist pen on watercolor paper.

Several Austin High School students came home with high awards from a recent art competition.

The following students competed in the section 1AA Minnesota State High School League Visual Arts Festival the weekend of April 25: Colten Detwiler in 12th grade, Hannah Perez in 10th grade, Keenan Schultz in 11th grade, Vanessa Halverson in 10th grade, and Jazmin Chavez Montano in 12th grade entered artwork in the drawing category. Each student worked throughout the semester and school year on their projects.

Each student received a superior rating for their drawings and scored the highest points possible per category. In addition to the superior rating’s, Colten Detwiler won Best of Show for his pointillism drawing of a gorilla. He was invited to display his winning artwork at The Perpich Center for the Arts campus from May 9-16.

This piece titled “Girl with Red Hair” received a superior rating at the show. The colored pencil drawing was completed by 10th-grader Hannah Perez with using Prismacolor pencils on Bristol artist paper. -- Photos provided.
