Hayfield softball team drops state quarterfinal game, moves to consolation round

NORTH MANKATO — The Hayfield softball team came out swinging, but it cooled off as it lost to 7-2 to New Life Academy of Woodbury in Minnesota Class A state softball quarterfinal in Caswell Park Thursday.
The Vikings (21-5 overall) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Kyal Heydt doubled in a run and Bhrett Zahnle scored on a wild pitch. Hayfield had just two hits the rest of the way and NLA pitcher Valerie Holhol retired 17 Hayfield hitters in a row before Kaya Johnson singled with two outs in the seventh.
The Eagles (21-3 overall) took the lead for good in the fifth inning when Malorie Giere singled in a run to make it 3-2 and Hannah Nelson hit a sacrifice fly.
NLA broke the game open when it added three runs in the sixth.
Hayfield will play Edgerton/Southwest Christian (22-2 overall) in an consolation game 3 p.m. Thursday. The best Hayfield can now finish is fifth place if its wins its last two games.
