Minneapolis seeks federal help to buy police body cameras

MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis is looking for help from the federal government as it looks to outfit all city police officers with body cameras.
The Star Tribune reports the city has already designated more than $1 million to buy the cameras. But it hopes it can defray some of the cost by getting up to $600,000 in a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice. The city would have to provide matching funds.
The City Council’s public safety committee has voted to turn in the application. Officials say they hope to have body cameras on all officers by late this year.
Some City Council members worry that applying for help could cause a delay, as the city won’t get an answer to its application until October or November.
