Lifeguards at the Austin Municipal pool saved a 7-year-old girl from drowning Wednesday afternoon.

Pool staff saw the girl face-down in the water at about 1:30 p.m. and pulled her out, according to Parks and Recreation Director Kim Underwood.

The girl started breathing on her own as emergency personnel responded to the scene. She was taken to Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin as a precaution.

Underwood said it’s rare for emergency staff to come to the pool for a drowning, but pool staff responded properly to prevent a tragedy.

“All of our lifeguards are certified for CPR, so we don’t put anybody in the chair that’s not,” she said.
