ST. PAUL — Country star Keith Urban will make his Minnesota State Fair debut Aug. 28 when he headlines the Grandstand with support from Kelsea Ballerini.
Tickets are $64 and $49 and go on sale at 11 a.m. Thursday via etix.com , by phone at 800-514-3849 and in person at the State Fair’s box office.
Urban, 47, has been a consistent presence on the country charts since his first hit, 1999’s “It’s a Love Thing.” He has since landed at No. 1 with 15 singles, including the 2011 hat trick of “Without You,” “Long Hot Summer” and “You Gonna Fly.” Urban’s most recent album, 2013’s “Fuse,” generated five Top 10 smashes, including “We Were Us” (with Miranda Lambert) and “Raise ‘Em Up” (with Eric Church).
Last week, funk guitarist/producer Nile Rodgers told Yahoo he has recorded a pair of songs with Urban and compared them to his work with David Bowie: “(‘Let’s Dance’) was huge because it spoke to a broader audience. I think a record like this will speak to a broader audience (for Urban), and the country people will come around.” Urban has already released the first single, “John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16,” from his impending new album, although it’s not one of the Rodgers tracks.
Born in New Zealand, Urban was a vocal coach on Australia’s first season of “The Voice” in 2011. Two years later, Urban joined the judges panel on “American Idol.” He will hold that position through the show’s final season, set to debut in January.
One final Grandstand show, on Sept. 5, will be announced soon.
